British
Lord British Cambridge (Lord Cantabrigian British) is the permanent king of Britain, who is also a personification of Richard Garriot, one of the founders of the Origin Systems studio, Inc.
Despite the fact that this legendary character appears in all Games of the Ultima series as the main plot engine and just the main “good” character, many players have a desire to kill him, either considering the ruler a complete asshole deserful of death, or deciding to accomplish something at first glance impossible.
Each time, the developers tried to make a British unknown. Every time they did not succeed. Players are simple jamming, using ultimatical tools of death or a skilled bagose still destroyed the monarch.
Garriot was delighted with such a sophistication of fans of the series in search of ways to kill British. At some point, he decided to give an outlet to the players and already intentionally prescribed a couple of colorful ways to kill the lord in Ultima VII: The Black Gate.
In Ultima Online, Garriot managed his alter ego himself from the very beginning of the alpha test of the flesh before the transfer of all rights to the game of the infamous Electronic Arts. In this role, he organized all kinds of events and somehow tried to organize social life, distributing orders to his close associates (who also played out members of the royal court).
Richard Garriot, like any of the developers, at the entrance to the game put the flag of immortality on his character. How would he not like to watch the players who kill his personification, but in the online game he could no longer allow this: this would bring too many problems. (Do not forget that at least British could be killed in single Ultima, but the passage from this was either difficult or it became completely impossible).

Stress test
On August 9, 1997, for about a month of the official release of the game, Garriot decides to gather a crowd of people and arrange a stress test in the Blacksurne Castle: to check if the server will withstand a large clusters of the people in one place. To warm up interest, it was announced that the meeting would be visited by Lord British with Lord Blacksurn (Avatar of another developer, Starr Long).

Rainz

The thing is that at that time Richard Garriot simply forgot to include immortality for his personification, which became fatal for the Lord.

Consequences
